History[]

The original Zelda, while not a princess, was a plucky young girl who lived in the isles above the clouds. However, destined for greatness, she was abducted by the servants of Demise, and rescued by her best friend Link. The two of them together defeated Demise in the first chapter of the history of the land that would become known as Hyrule.

The all-powerful Triforce, an artifact granting blessings of the gods, foretold the continual reincarnation of these three individuals, destined to bear Courage, Power, and Wisdom, with Zelda representing the latter. Indeed, for centuries to come, there would always be a Princess Zelda there to accompany Link whenever Hyrule was threatened. As the ruler of Hyrule, Zelda was often threatened, or outright deposed, by any evil forces that emerged, and required Link to rescue her. However, more times than can be counted, she has also aided the Hero of Time, either directly in combat or by supplying him with magic and spirit. During the events of Ocarina of Time, she was able to transform into the ninja Sheik to help Link, and in Spirit Tracks, her ghostly spirit inhabited a suit of Phantom Armour to accompany Link directly on his adventures.

In one timeline where all of Hyrule was flooded, Zelda seemed to instead be reincarnated as the pirate captain Tetra, though she once again served as both a helping hand, and a damsel in distress, to the Hero of Courage.

Personality[]

The many different incarnations of Zelda all have different personalities. Some are young, filled with energy, and optimistic about the wider world. Some are less naïve, and in constant worry for the dangers that threaten Hyrule. Still others are matured, calm, and collected. However, they all retain some similar characteristics, namely being kind and selfless, standing brave in the face of danger, and placing their trust in their friend/saviour Link should they themselves not be enough to keep evil at bay. Holding the Triforce of Wisdom, Zelda is able to calculate strategies and tactics to help Link combat these threats, often using historical knowledge to identify and exploit weaknesses to holy magics.

  • Despite being the character named in the series title, Zelda does not appear in every game. She is noticeably absent from Link's Awakening.
  • Zelda's reincarnations always being destined to be royalty, is possibly a result of her original incarnation being a reborn Goddess, giving her divine blood
