History[]

In 1999, over 50 years after the original Godzilla's attack, a second Godzilla appeared to ravage Japan. Without any suitable weaponry to combat this threat, a new weapon was required. This weapon would end up being Mechagodzilla, also referred to a Kiryu, a massive cyborg built around the bones of the very first Godzilla.

In 2003, Mechagodzilla was complete and given armaments to carry out its purpose. It's first battle with Godzilla in Yokohama, however, proved disastrous as Godzilla's roar awakened the original Godzilla's conscience within Kiryu, causing the mecha to go berserk and devastate the city. However, after modifications, Kiryu was ready for round two against Godzilla, who was attacking Tokyo. After battling extensively, Mecha-G flew Godzilla out to Tokyo Bay and fired its signature weapon, the Absolute Zero Cannon. After its firing, a wounded Godzilla returned to sea.

In 2004, it was revealed by the Shobijin, Mothra's twin fairies, that Godzilla was attacking because of the use of the original Godzilla's bones for Kiryu, the use of which (being the remains of the dead) was an affront to nature. They further warned that they must abandon Kiryu or make an enemy of Mothra, and if Kiryu was abandoned, she would defend them. After Godzilla attacked Tokyo, Mothra and her Larvae did battle with Godzilla, with Mecha-G also appearing to battle Godzilla. After Mothra's larvae coated Godzilla in silk, Kiryu once again went berserk, but this time, flew itself and Godzilla into the ocean. This stopped Godzilla and fulfilled the Japanese government's promise to Mothra.

Personality[]

For the most part, Mechagodzilla operates based on its pilot, who was Akane Yashiro in the 2002 film, Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. However, being built using the bones of the original Godzilla, when his conscience hijacks Kiryu, the mecha takes on the original Godzilla's wrathful disposition towards mankind, as shown after Kiryu and the second Godzilla's initial encounter in Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla. This is further echoed in Kiryu's rampage, crashing through buildings and unleashing his arsenal on the city of Yokohama. However, there is a change in this behavior upon Kiryu's later incident of going berserk, recognizing what must be done to follow the natural order of the world, and peacefully flying Godzilla and itself away, and plunging themselves into the depths of the ocean.

Weaknesses[]

  • Firing the Absolute Zero drains 40% of Mechagodzilla's power, reducing the amount of time the mech can remain in battle.
  • AC-3 White Heron jets are used to remotely pilot Mechagodzilla. If connection between the two is severed, then Kiryu must be manually piloted from within.
  • The original Godzilla's conscience can overtake Mecha-G's controls, causing him to go berserk.

Trivia[]

  • The idea of other cybernetic counterparts of kaiju, similar to Kiryu, was hinted at in the Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. Super works book published in 2004.
  • Kiryu being a cyborg counterpart of the original Godzilla used as an anti-Godzilla weapon is similar to the MonsterVerse's version of Mechagodzilla, as both end up going berserk due to the deceased kaiju taking control of them. Though in the case of the MonsterVerse Mechagodzilla, it is King Ghidorah's conscience that hijacks the robot.
