History[]

Showa Era[]

In prehistoric times, an ancient species of turtle like creature lived on the lost continent of Atlantis. These animals, of which Gamera was, were able to feed on different sources of energy, including heat, electricity, and radiation. Much later, in the midst of the Cold War, a group of stealth planes of unknown nationality were spotted flying over the Arctic. When American fighters were dispatched to stop them, an ensuing dog fight resulted in one of the unknown planes being shot down, and detonating a nuclear device that destroyed a massive ice sheet. It was from this ice sheet that Gamera had emerged, displaying hostility to mankind, although not towards children. Seeing him as a threat, the JSDF would attempt to stop him. His attacks towards mankind would come to a halt with the appearance of Barugon. Following this battle, Gamera would go one to face several other monsters and alien invaders, including Gyaos, Viras, Guiron, Jiger, and Zigra. He would come to be known as the "friend of all children," and during battle, would go out his way to save them. He no longer attacked humans as well, the only exception being when under mind control. Gamera would once again emerge and battle all of the kaiju he had faced thus far, who were under the control of the captain of the space pirate ship, Zanon. After defeating his old foes, Gamera went into space and destroyed the invaders' vessel, but sacrificed himself in the process.

Heisei Era[]

The highly advanced civilization of Atlantis was in danger of collapse after the Gyaos, a creature of their own creation, had turned on them. In order to stop these Gyaos from proliferating out of control further, the Atlanteans created Gamera, massive turtle-like creatures to keep them in check. However, it was too late to save their civilization, so the Atlanteans left the last of the Gamera they had created to rest for future peoples that would need him. Thousands of years later, a floating atoll was found drifting in the Pacific Ocean, which was later revealed to be Gamera. He had awakened as the Gyaos had begun to stir, when human processes had caused them to resurge. A young girl named Asagi Kusenagi, having received an Atlantean Magatama - an orichalum bead - from the atoll, formed a psychic connection with Gamera, allowing her to read his thoughts, share his injury (and he in turn can heal her), and provide him life energy; Gamera would sever this connection later on, however. Following his battle with a Super Gyaos, Gamera would encounter the insectoid aliens, the Symbiotic Legion, and the mysterious Atlantean creation, Irys. In this Gamera would battle each of these threats to defend the balance of the Earth and all of its life. After defeating Irys, the Guardian of the Universe was prepared to face a flock of thousands of Hyper Gyaos, their largest and strongest form.

Gamera the Brave[]

In this iteration, Gamera was not a single creature, but an entity. In 1973, when a flock of Gyaos attacked the small seaside town in the Mie Prefecture called Shima, Gamera had been forced to take his own life, self-destructing in order to kill the ravenous monsters. 33 years later, a boy named Toru would find an egg in the sight where Gamera had sacrificed himself. From this egg would hatch a turtle, which Toru named "Toto;" little did the boy know that his new pet was the reincarnation of Gamera. Over the course of days, Toto would grow substantially, and displayed the ability to fly and shoot fire. Toru was hesitant to accept that Toto was Gamera when told of this, recognizing the first one sacrificed himself and fearing that Toto may do the same. However, he would soon have to, as Zedus, a lizard-like monster, had emerged. Following two battles, which Zedus had the upper hand in, Toto was given a red stone, which allowed the Gamera reincarnation to attain his full power. After vanquishing Zedus with a fireball, Toto flew off, ready for his role as the next Gamera.

Personality[]

In the Showa Era continuity, Gamera started off hostile towards mankind, and attacked various features of them. This temperament would shift as the films progressed, fighting other creatures that threatened mankind, until he was seen not as a dangerous monster, but a hero. However, he seemed to protect children from the start, notably rescuing one from a collapsing lighthouse in the first film, Gamera the Giant Monster, and would actively protect them in battles against enemy kaiju. This earned him the nickname "friend of all children." The Heisei trilogy depicts Gamera as a benevolent creature whose purpose is to protect the Earth and all life on it. He would inadvertently damage cities and cause human casualties during battles with other kaiju, which got the JSDF to view him as a threat; however, he does protect humans, including children, in the heat of battles in all three films. He also does not respond to attacks from the JSDF. As Gamera viewed anything that threatened the balance of Earth as an enemy, it was hinted that he may turn against humanity of they were to continue to live in a way that threatened this balance. In every continuity, Gamera is shown to be very self-sacrificing, often protecting people from monster attacks to his own detriment.
