Atrocitus is a villain from DC Comics. As the leader of the Red Lanterns, he is an antagonist of the Green Lantern.

History

Before the Lantern Corps, the enigmatic Guardians of the Universe created the Manhunters, a race of robot soldiers designed to keep peace throughout the cosmos. Instead, they went rogue, and in the process, slaughtered all of Space Sector 666, save for the alien soldier Atros and four other survivors. Swearing venegance on the Guardians, and after learning about the prophecy of "Blackest Night" that would bring about their downfall, Atros renamed himself Atrocitus, and led an attack on the Guardians as the leader of the "Five Inversions"; the attack failed, and the five were imprisoned. However, word of their uncovered prophecy struck the curiosity of the Green Lantern Abin Sur, who eventually freed Atrocitus from his imprisonment in order to uncover more details. This was a fatal mistake; after escaping and murdering Sur, Atrocitus resumed his mission to bring about the Blackest Night. It took the combined efforts of the Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and Sinestro to stop him.

The defeat at the hands of the Guardian's "puppets" further enraged Atrocitus, to the point where he forged his own lantern power battery to counter the Green Lantern's own. Murdering the other four Inversions in the process, Atrocitus created the first Red Lantern ring, powered not only by his sheer rage, but blood as well. By recruiting other individuals who felt wronged by the Guardians, Atrocitus founded the Red Lantern Corps. They made themselves known to the universe when they charged in on the war between the Green Lanterns and Sinestro's new Yellow Lanterns, and began slaughtering both sides, driven by nothing but their anger and demand for revenge.

Personality

Atrocitus is personified as rage incarnate, befitting not just any regular Red Lantern, but the founder of the entire Corps. After his family, and indeed entire world, was lost due to the carelessness of the Guardians of the Universe, Atrocitus has been driven by revenge ever since, to the point where anyone who has ever served the Guardians, past or future, is also a target of his wrath. He frequently engages in blood magic, viewing prophecies he can use as leverage to instill anger and doubt into his opponents, and through this, was responsible for beginning Sinestro's turn away from the Green Lanterns. However, he still views Sinestro as an arch enemy, and personally sought him for execution after the former hero's treason against the Guardians.

Atrocitus is so bent on destroying the Guardians, that much of his lifelong mission is to bring about the prophesized "Blackest Night"; his machinations ended up leaving William Hand, the Black Lantern founder, with the means to bring it about. Wen Hand succeeded too well, and began slaughtering all life across the universe, Atrocitus reluctantly allied with the other six Lantern Corps to combat the new wave of Black Lanterns, though not without attempting to seize greater powers for himself in the process. In his heart, his rage is only towards the Guardians and those who serve them, and though he will never admit it, he does recognize good from evil and when some threats are greater than old grudges. Indeed while the Red Lantern Ring drives most of its wearers into an animalistic frenzy, he has enough control over his rage to retain his focus.
